In terrible times like these where people are afraid, confused, and just relying on the media for information, a lot of misinformation gets told, which brings more fear to people.
I’m here to debunk the myths and bring peace of mind to those in need.
The first huge misconception going around is that only elderly people can be infected with the virus. That is totally wrong.
The virus may have more devastating effects on people 65 and older but people of any age can be infected and still have similar effects, like trouble breathing, nausea and high fevers.
Now the only thing is that younger people may not show symptoms and that is why experts are urging the younger people to stay at home and take care of their parents, grandparents, etc.
Many people also think coronavirus is airborne, which it isn’t. You will not be infected with the virus by just breathing the same air as someone that is infected.
The primary way the virus can be transmitted is by coughing or sneezing on someone.
Does eating excessive amounts of garlic help prevent you from getting the virus? No, it doesn’t.
“There’s no reason to believe eating garlic… will shield you from the coronavirus,” said Roslyn Stone, chief operating officer of Zero Hour Health in Connecticut, when interviewed by U.S. News.
Can wearing a face mask protect you from the virus? No, it can’t and that is a very common misconception.
Experts say the masks are really only beneficial for the people that are already sick, as a way to help stop the spread.
“So many people, myself included, thought that by wearing a mask and using gloves we would be protected from the virus but I just recently found out that isn’t true and it can be pointless to use one,” said Sofia Bouhout, a freshman at Agua Fria.
Many people have fears due to all they’ve been seeing and hearing all over the media.
“I heard that the virus was created to be a form of population control… but my biggest fear is not the virus, it’s how people are reacting,” said Joshua Silva, a junior at Agua Fria.
He followed by saying, “There are many stores without food and water because of people who are terrified the world is going to end.”
There are a bunch of other things people are fearing but in a time like this, the best thing you can do is stay home and avoid unnecessary travel. Spend time with your loved ones and enjoy time to yourself.
Listen to the experts, but also try to avoid social media outlets that are increasing fears.
The sooner we do that, the sooner we will be able to get to our normal lives.
