COVID-19, better known as coronavirus, has evolved from a simple regional-enclosed outbreak to a global pandemic and because of this, Covid-19 is changing the way we live day to day on our usual basis of life.
One prime example is the closures of bars and restaurants. Now, if they remain open, such places use drive-thru or pick up, as you can no longer go in and receive service like normal.
This obviously is a bad thing for employees living from check to check. If they don’t get the money they need, how are they going to survive this work stoppage? Some businesses won’t survive the quarantine as well with the sudden loss of customers damaging their profits. COVID-19 is really making it hard for small businesses.
And that’s not even the worst of it. People fear the government will initiate a complete lockdown where no one can leave their home except for essential workers.
So how are people gonna survive if the place they work at closes down? Well, many companies and business owners are making relief funds for workers so they could manage through this difficult time. here’s a list of a few:
One Fair wage
This campaign is a nonprofit campaign that has a goal of helping food workers against the low minimum wage laws for tipped restaurant workers. Their target is $213,000.
•Unite Here Education and Support Fund
Unite Here is a labor union helping people with rent, groceries, health insurance, and lost wages. What’s cool about this campaign is that it goes beyond the food industries and helps others like hotels, airports, and casinos.
•ROC Disaster Relief Fund
The nonprofit Restaurant Opportunities Centers (ROC) has set a target of $500,000 to help the documented and undocumented restaurant workers who lost their job during the pandemic.
•USBG Bartender Emergency Assistance Program
The Bartender Guild is helping Bartenders affected by the virus by raising money for bartenders to get by in these dire times.
If you’re by any chance feeling the need to help these relief funds, it’s quite easy. You can help by simply buying gift cards or ordering delivery food from your favorite restaurant. This will indeed help workers in many ways. Gift cards, for example, help in the circumstance that the restaurant may be closed. This is because the money spent on the cards will help said industry it’s spent on.
In the end, the best thing to do when there’s a pandemic like this is to stay home and cook your own food. Stay safe and practice social distancing!
