The new school year begins which means new freshmen for the 2024-2025 school year here at Agua Fria High School! It is such an exciting time for Student Council and Clubs because we get to do more spirit events, although freshmen are often stressed about being in such a big space like high school. It’s new and new things take time to get used to. So let’s talk about different perspectives on how to make your freshman year the best it can be!
Although we enjoy bringing spirit and holding events for freshmen, it can also be very overwhelming for them with all the noise and all of the events as well as having to go to certain places on days for Link Crew and after-school events. So how should we help them? It is very reasonable for freshmen to keep to themselves but it never hurts to try and be social. Being a social butterfly requires many factors that freshmen may not have because they are just developing the personality they want to pull for high school. It requires seeing different perspectives and being able to acknowledge the presence of all the small details around you.
Everyone has a different perspective; some think freshmen should stay lowkey and not worry as much because it “doesn’t matter” but a lot of people do agree with the fact that this can be the most important year. I interviewed one of our newest journalism students, Haylee Lowe because she loves this topic. So let’s go through Haylee’s main tips!
- Focus on getting schoolwork done! This is one of the most important things because that is what high school is all about. Freshmen year will bring new topics and subjects never seen before, come with a learning mindset but still do not be too hard on yourself!
- Do not let people influence you or drag you away from your priorities. At the end of the day you only have yourself, trust your gut.
- Here’s a fun one! Build bonds with your teachers! Yes there might be some teachers that you might dislike, and that’s normal, but they are here to serve you in your education so be polite and be nice.
- -A controversial one is whether or not you should have a lot of friends and how high you should be on the social scale. Have close friends, but dont revolve your life around them. Be on top of your tasks before anything else.
High school, especially freshmen year is a once in a lifetime experience and it is your first time being exposed to a whole different world. So what can we do to help teens with anxiety? Overcoming freshmen’ anxiety says to embrace the change, “Try and remind yourself that the change is going to come anyway, so you can either enter the school year with doubt and fear or you can start off with optimism and enthusiasm about this new chapter in your life instead of negative thoughts” change cannot be stopped and the world will keep spinning with or without you, you can follow along or get left behind.
So get on out there and do the most important thing, be INVOLVED!
