Christopher Edwin Breaux better known as Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean is an American singer, songwriter, and rapper. He is well known today for his albums ‘Channel Orange’ and ‘Blonde’. However, after his fame and popularity, one question remains: “Where did he go?”
Frank Ocean began his career as a ghostwriter for many known artists such as Beyonce, Justin Bieber, and John Legend. He later started to write music for himself therefore adopting the stage name ‘Frank Ocean’. He got the name from the late singer Frank Sinatra and the 1960s film “Ocean’s 11’. He joined the musical group ‘Odd Future’ through the main member Tyler the Creator. The group was continuously growing and Frank Ocean kept meeting new people, one of the people he met was Tricky Stewart who helped him sign with ‘Def Jam Recordings’. Frank would endure many trials and tribulations when first being signed to the label. Due to this Frank self-released Nostalgia, Ultra for free. This album focuses on Oceans’ interpersonal relationships, personal reflection, and social commentary. This was only the beginning for Frank Ocean as he began to gain a lot of positive feedback.
In 2011 Frank Ocean stated that his relationship with his label was very much healing. With all the positive feedback that ‘Nostalgia, Ultra’ gained for Frank Ocean it also made him known. This mixtape led to his collaboration with Jay-Z and Kanye for one song. He also collaborated with Tyler the Creator in ‘She’. He went on to be in many events with ‘Odd Future’. In May 2011, Frank Oceans’ single ‘Novacane’ was released. In June of that same year, Frank Ocean announced he would be working on the upcoming collaborative album with Kanye West and Jay-Z, “Watch the Throne”. He co-wrote 2 of the songs on the album. With his relationship with his label healing, in June of 2012, he revealed a new track, ‘Pyramids’.
With this new track the following month he performed another track from the album on ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’. In that same month, Frank Ocean would come out stating he had feelings for both men and women. He received much positive support from colleagues after coming out. After this series of events, Ocean would finally release his second album ‘channel ORANGE’ on July 10, 2012. Only hours after its release, the album was named number one on the Top Albums chart. After this release, in 2013 ‘Channel Orange’ won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Album. Additionally, “No Church in the Wild”, which was one of the collaborative songs in which Frank Ocean worked with Jay-Z and Kanye, won the Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.
In August 2016, Frank Ocean released a visual album titled ‘Endless’ as well as his second studio album ‘Blonde’, which went straight to the top of the charts in not only the U.S. but as well as the U.K.
This was the peak of Oceans’ career, and many people continue to question why he would disappear at his peak. Though, as Frank Ocean’s biggest fan, I can personally say I have questioned why and will continue wishing he releases once more. Frank Ocean has never been one to stick to something just because he seems committed he never liked to confine himself to anything in particular as seen before when he went on to a solo without the label. Although much speculation and many rumors have been spread about the reappearance of Frank Ocean no one truly knows. All we can do now is wait.
