The Phillies going into the season were looking like a strong team and towards the beginning they were looking like one of the teams to beat. Their players were healthy and they had a strong offense and the pitching was lights out. Bryce Harper, their biggest star, was looking like he was back in his MVP form and was in the talks to be named MVP by the end-of-season awards. The Phillies continued to play good baseball throughout the first half of the season ending it 62-34 being the best record in the MLB ahead of the World Series contending Los Angeles Dodgers by 6.5 games. The Phillies were fighting all season and eventually clinched first in the NL East with merely any competition beating both the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets out by six games.
Philadelphia earned themselves a first-round bye because of their succession in the NL East so they awaited who they were going to play between the New York Mets and the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers were no match for the Mets in the wild card series ultimately losing to the Mets 2 games to 1. The Phillies looked ahead to playing the Mets and everyone in baseball figured there was no way the Mets could beat the Phillies in a 5-game series.
The Mets were written off in every way possible by fans across each fanbase and went into Citizens Bank Park home of the Phillies for game one and they quickly showed everyone around the MLB they had a good shot at beating the Phillies. The Mets got off to a hot start once again in game two putting them up 2-0 in the 3rd inning. They couldn’t hold this lead and ended up losing game two 6-7. You could see that there was still no momentum shift between the teams because the Phillies’ pitching staff just looked worn out and had no gas left. They were winning ball games but the defense was keeping them close by giving up so many runs. In game 3 the Phillies were struck by the wrath of the Mets giving up seven runs in the game scoring in a majority of the innings they played. Philadelphia ended up losing the game 7-2 putting them down in the series 2-1. The future wasn’t looking bright for the Phillies with lots of people asking questions and wondering what was going on with this powerhouse first-place NL East team. They went into game 4 being in New York facing a tough crowd, they were facing an elimination win or go-home situation for themselves and were first to score in the top of the 4th putting them up 1-0. They didn’t keep this lead and it resulted in them giving up a 4-run sixth putting them down 4-1 and ultimately both offenses went quiet with no more scoring going on the rest of the game. The Phillies lost miserably and ended up losing the series by a record of 3 games to 1.
This 2024 season did not end in the way the Phillies and their fanbase wanted to but looking back they were successful in the regular season. They have a lot to look forward to next season and hope to have a big offseason to hopefully pick up some more big weapons to add to their already talented roster to achieve their biggest goal which is to finally get the job done and bring home a World Series ring for the entire faithful city of Philadelphia.
