Agua Fria High School had their Homecoming game against Apollo High School and it didn’t turn out for the football team as expected but it was still a good game. The team battled for the first two quarters and played good football but didn’t end the way they were hoping to. The team has had a shaky season up to this point in time and feel they haven’t lived up to their expectations, said their starting quarterback Aldo Ohlmaier. The team was 3-5 going into the game and were hoping to end the season’s last two games on a positive note especially since they were Homecoming and Senior Night back to back. The offense looked strong throughout the game and the run game seemed to be working throughout the night but defensively they went through the mud and had lots of mistakes. Their quarterback Aldo Ohlmaier also said that if the team let up less mistakes they could be a stronger football team and ultimately limiting mistakes would keep them in games and not make them beat themselves each game.
The Owls had a good run putting up 26 points throughout the game and had some big plays offensively and these came from their star running back Jayvier Cook along with the wide receivers Adrian Leyva and Xavier Matthews. The offense had looked good in the second half of the year and it was being proven throughout that time but defensively they couldn’t find a way to buckle down causing lots of points to be scored on them. More crucial mistakes came from the team in this game including a pair of interceptions thrown by Aldo Ohlmaier. Arguably these mistakes could have been pinned on someone else but fell on Aldo’s shoulders and he shrugged it off and kept playing his game. The team was strong but they really couldn’t match up with a lot of opponents due to their size and it began to be proven in this Homecoming game against Apollo.
The second half of the play was all Apollo and they took their chance to run up their s
core which they did. The defense began to wear out and let up more and more mistakes. The offense also seemed to be running out of gas not putting up any points, setting them up to fall more and more behind in the game. The crowd was trying to stay positive for this Agua Fria football team but the energy was still lacking from the crowd. The game continued to roll with just an Apollo showcase of their powerhouse offense and ultimately ended Agua Fria’s glimmer of hope at winning this Homecoming game. Agua Fria was already out of playoff contention before this game so looking at it from a fans standpoint it didn’t matter what the outcome was other than for this team to enjoy their last few weeks together. After the clock finally hit double 0’s it was a final score of 41-26.
The team brushed this one off and tried to forget about it quickly and began to look ahead to their final game of the season in hopes of going out with a bang for all the seniors in their final game in an Agua Fria Owls uniform. After talking to Aldo Ohlamier a little bit more after the game he said that he just wanted to try and limit these costly mistakes and make sure they play a full four quarters of football to make sure they bring home the W against Cactus Shadows High School to end the season on the most positive note they can.
