‘Utopia’ or ‘Certified Lover Boy’?
April 8, 2021
It’s been almost three years since we last received albums from Travis Scott and Drake. Over the past two years, we did receive mixtapes from both artists. With Travis Scott releasing ‘Jack Boys’ which was a seven-song mixtape featuring artists like Don Toliver, Luxury Tax, Sheck Wes, Young Thug, Offset, Quavo, Pop Smoke, and Travis Scott himself.
As for Drake, he released two mixtapes in the past two years, one being ‘Care Package’ which was released in August 2019. ‘Care Package’ had a variety of 17 songs. The other mixtape Drake would release would be ‘Dark Lane Demo Tapes.’ This mixtape had a variety of 14 songs and was released in May of 2020.
The question is what do the people want more right now? Which album will have the higher debut? Which album will disappoint? Which album will shock fans?
On March 16th I talked to Rene Lopez about which artist she enjoys more. Rene said, “I personally enjoy Drake more than Travis Scott because Drake uses less autotune.” I personally disagree because I do enjoy Travis more than Drake.
Both artists had a huge impact on the music industry when they released. Travis Scott with ‘Astroworld’ debuting at number 1 on the hot 100 selling 537,000 album units in the first week. As for Drake, he debuted at number 1 with ‘Scorpion’ selling 732,000 in its first week.
As for me, I’m looking forward to hearing ‘Utopia’ over ‘Certified Lover Boy.’ Someone who can agree with me is Isabel Murillo. When I asked her what she’s waiting for and who she is more of a fan of, she replied with, “Travis Scott. I’m mostly looking forward to it because he actually tells stories behind his albums. Even with Astroworld, showing a really unique side and more of his personality he has as this energetic rager.”
Over the past two years, both Drake and Travis Scott have been doing collaborations with Drake collabing with Nike and A Bathing Ape. With Travis Scott also collaborating with Nike, Fortnite, and plenty of other brands as far as recently getting his own alcoholic beverage.
Recently I reconnected with my friend Robert Riley and I asked him who he prefers out of the two artists and what he’s waiting for the most. Robert replied with “First off, I’m anticipating Utopia a thousand times more than CLB, but with how big Drake is I think his numbers are gonna be higher than Travis’s. But I do think [in terms of] the quality of the album, Travis is gonna take it because he’s been working with lots of musicians of different genres/music styles so it’s definitely gonna be interesting.”
As you can see most of my friends and I are in favor of Travis Scott and are waiting for ‘Utopia.’ Now the question is what are you waiting for the most?
