It’s-a Me, Mario
March 30, 2023
April 7th, 2023, the release date of the Mario Movie in theaters. Yes, you read that right, the Mario Movie is releasing in theaters on April 7th of this year. And no, I do not mean the live-action one from 1993. (By the time this article was being written, it has been revealed that it will actually release two days early on April 5th, not April 7th)
First revealed in a Nintendo Direct from 2018, the Mario Movie is an upcoming movie being made by Universal Studios. You might know them from a couple of other movies such as Despicable Me, the Harry Potter movies, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, and others. So far we do not know much about the movie. However, there have been three trailers released, if you want to watch them yourself, you can find them here, here, and here.
So far, we don’t know much about the casting except for some major characters. We currently know that Chris Pratt will play Mario, Luigi will be played by Charlie Day, Princess Peach will be played by Anya Taylor-Joy, Donkey Kong will be played by Seth Rogen, and Bowser will be played by Jack Black. Also, you can’t forget about the directors of the movie, Aaron Horvath and Micheal Jelenic.
As of right now, not much else is known about the Mario Movie, at least not that I’m aware of. Nintendo and Universal Studios have been keeping details of the movie very secret. However, we know that the main plot will probably involve Bowser trying to take over the Mushroom Kingdom and being stopped by Mario, peach, and many other main characters. Although an ad campaign for “Super Mario Bros. Plumbing” was made, it could mean something, or it could not. I have no idea what it means, but maybe you do. You can watch the “commercial” here and go to the website for it here.
With all this talk about the Mario Movie, it’s probably a good idea to talk about some of the history of Mario himself. Mario is a fictional Italian plumber made by the company Nintendo and created by Shigeru Miyamoto. They are the main character of a game series by the same name (Super Mario Bros.). His little brother, Luigi, was also made by the same company and person as Mario and appeared in all the main Super Mario Bros. games.
Mario is one of the main faces of gaming, being one of the first video game characters made back in the early days of gaming. Although their main series is Super Mario Bros., they also debuted in Donkey Kong before then. Nowadays, there are still many Mario games being made. While not necessarily plain old Super Mario Bros. games, there are still new ones such as New Super Mario Bros., the 3D Mario game series ,and multiple spin offs such as Luigi’s Mansion, Yoshi’s Island, Mario Party, and more.
Enough talking about all these Mario games that you’ve probably already heard of and/or played. Back to discussing the Mario Movie. As I’ve already mentioned, it comes out on April 7th (5th) in America. However, it comes out on April 28th in japan. So if you are somehow reading this in Japan, you have to wait a bit longer to watch it than us in America (sorry). Anyways, whether you are planning on seeing this movie or not, I would personally recommend you do it as what we’ve seen so far looks really good.
