Disney is mostly meant for an animated industry that is used to produce cartoon shows or animated movies. Disney however started to make a different approach, especially during the year 2023. Disney has started to make their animated movies into live-action, however, Disney already started doing that in the year of 1994 when they remade “The Jungle Book”. Disney then created more and more throughout the years, but now in 2023, they decided to change things for their live-action remakes. On September 9th, 2023 a teaser trailer was released on Youtube and it was to tease the live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid”.

Little Mermaid was already a movie back in 1989 but was animated, until now a remake was released on May 26, 2023. Fans were very upset when the teaser was dropped, but it had nothing to do with its original play style. The original Little Mermaid was a colorful and very fun design meant for kids, but sadly everything seems dull from the water being dark at the bottom to the new sea creatures being horrifying. The new sea creatures are made way too realistic and obviously, that would be the point, but there is a solution to this, which is to make them look cartoony, but add realistic texture. In the new “Lion King” live-action remake the baby lions actually feel more animated, by movement, but have realistic texture.

Realistic sea creatures weren’t even the main problem for the live-action remakes, it was the recoloring of characters. In the new teaser trailer, you can see Ariel is not a pale mermaid, but more of a dark skin mermaid. Disney even did this to Tinkerbell in the trailer “Peter Pan & Wendy” which was released on February 28, 2023. The closest to an actor looking like the character is the new movie “Snow White” which is to release in 2024 and is being played by Rachel Zegler, a Latina actress. She’s not typically a brownish Latina, but more of a pale one, which is why she’s the only actress to play the right race in a character in a while.

Disney is of course doing this for a reason and it’s kind of splitting its audiences with these choices. Disney wants to expand their audiences for these choices, to prove that anyone can be a Disney princess mermaid. Instead of just constantly using a pale white girl, most of Disney’s audiences will just believe that they will have to be white in order to be a mermaid. Changing their skin tone is meant to prove to little kids and adults that have grown up with Disney, they already have their fair share of the experience with the animated versions of these movies.

The other rumor on the internet is simply that Disney just wants to make more profit by just remaking a movie and adding a black actress to them. It is possible because Will Smith was used as the Genie in Aladdin in the 2019 live-action remake “Aladdin”. I don’t think these rumors will be possible because 2019 Aladdin barely got 6.9/10 on IMDB and 57% of rotten tomatoes. If Disney really did care about the money, they would have changed the actor right after all the hate. I feel like Disney will never target money for live-action remakes, but the most believable rumor is that they’re running out of ideas for a Disney original film. This rumor is obviously false because there are thousands of ideas that can be used to make a Disney movie.
