OPINION: Why Did the Iraqi People Stand Against Their Government?

By: Arzoo Sultani

Why do the Iraqi people want to change their government?

Well, people in Iraq want a government that can solve its people’s problems, not one that doesn’t care about people’s safety and their way of life.

During demonstrations in Iraq, around 319 people died and at least 8,000 were injured. Because the government can’t protect the people, they are now protesting.

“All the evidence points to Iraqi security forces deploying these military-grade grenades against protesters in Baghdad, apparently aiming for their heads or bodies at point-blank range, said Lynn Maalouf, Middle East, research director at Amnesty, according to the New York Times.

The security forces used bullets, tear gas, stun grenades and sound bombs to remove the protesters, which caused hundreds of families to end up injured in the hospital of Baghdad.

Iraqis were frustrated and angered because they couldn’t live properly and have a normal life. Therefore, they want to change the government so they can live peacefully.

There are many teens who have graduated from colleges that have no careers and can’t afford to feed their families. Their lives are being wasted because the government can’t make more space and more job opportunities for them.

Teens are terrified because, due to the system their country has, people can’t really live in peace.

People in Iraq think changing the government will solve their problems. The government thinks otherwise.

“The problem is not just with Adel Mahdi, it’s with constitution, it’s with the system in our country,” said Mahomed Fedhil, 35, according to the New York Times. He’s a painter who had taken it upon himself to pick up trash strewn on a side street by the protesters gathering daily.

The Government should create job opportunities for the people and make strong security systems to keep the people safe.

It’s horrible having no home to live in, food to eat or money to buy something we need.

People want to have a financial life under their freedoms and be safe with their families for the rest of their lives.

The government thinks changing the government does not make any change and it’s the system that should be changed.

The system should be changed by Barham Salih, the president of Iraq, so people don’t protest against their government.

To solve the problems in Iraq, President Barham Salih should take action for its people and provide a reliable life for them.

“The people in the protests will not accept anything less than complete change in our governance,” said Raid Fahmi, who resigned from parliament, according to the New York Times.

Finally, President Barham Salih agreed to give a chance to the people and a selection was held for a new government. Which gave the people the opportunity of choosing their own government.
