Comedian John Mulaney, “The Comeback Kid,” has had quite a year. From divorce, relapse, rehab, and now a kid. The real question is — is John Mulaney okay?

John started his career in the late 2000s as a writer for Saturday Night Live, writing and creating characters like “Stefon” for Bill Hader. From there he got his own stand-up special New in Town in 2015, followed by The Comeback Kid and Kid Gorgeous a few years later. He even got a sitcom Mulaney, which is loosely based on his life.

A running theme in his stand-up specials is his struggles as a recovering addict. He’s stated multiple times in his specials that he started drinking and smoking at age 13, but he’s been sober since 2005.

He also mentioned his wife in all his stand-up acts. He said how much he loves her and one of his most famous jokes is not having kids. He said he and his wife don’t want kids and how a realtor once tried to turn every room in their new house into a nursery.

Knowing all of this you can imagine how shocked everyone was when we got the news in December 2020 that he had checked himself into rehab….and was divorcing his wife.

I remember how appalled I was when I saw the headline on Twitter because nobody really knew anything was wrong. In reality, it wasn’t his first stint in rehab that year.

Mulaney told Seth Meyers on Late Night, “I got to rehab in September (2020), I got out in October, I move out of my home from my ex-wife, I host Saturday Night Live on Halloween, I relapse on drugs after the show, then I continued using drugs, you and some other friends staged an intervention for me, I went to rehab again this time for two months, I got out in February and have been sober living,”

Shortly after he got back from his second run in rehab, the news broke he was no longer with his wife, Anna-Marie Tendler. Crazy thing is, he asked for the divorce. People were upset, naturally, but then rumors circulated that he was now in a relationship with actress Olivia Munn and that she was pregnant with his child, which he confirmed on Seth Meyers.

Now, these changes in Mulaney’s life have raised a ton of questions because looking at the timeline, some things don’t add up.

John got out of rehab a second time in February of 2021 and announced his separation from his wife in May of that year. That same month it was reported that he was in a relationship with Munn. In September of 2021 Mulaney announced that he and Munn were expecting a child together and on November 24, 2021, their son Malcolm was born.

To clear the air, we know he moved out of his ex-wife’s home in October, but we don’t know when they for sure separated. Looking at the timeline and remembering a little biology, February to November is nine months, the same amount of time a normal pregnancy is, meaning he was fresh out of rehab when Malcolm was conceived.

I’m not saying he cheated on Anna, but it’s still a little crazy he made a kid he always said he never wanted, right out of rehab. Anna didn’t take the breakup lightly either. She posted she was listening to Olivia Rodrigo’s new album “Sour” right after the news got out about their divorce, posting “hey bestie, you wanna hang out?” Sour is Olivia’s debut album about her own messy breakup.

John is also going on tour. The tour kicked off in March of 2022 and it’s called “John Mulaney From Scratch.” He makes plenty of jokes about his stay in rehab and his divorce. You can even get merchandise that reads “I saw him right after he got out of rehab.”

John has had quite the year. New relationships and a new child and a new tour. As long as he’s happy that’s all that matters and one can just hope he’s okay. At least he has new material for his shows right?
