Smashing Expectations: New Season of Girls Tennis

Sarah Ramsbacher

Agua Fria High School is getting prepared to start an exciting spring Tennis season with an abundance of girls joining this year. One of the most notable changes this season is the addition of Coach Rams as the new head coach for the girls team. As practice starts up again, the girls aim to focus on both improvement and enjoyment on the court.

The anticipation for this upcoming season is strong as the girls are fueled by Coach Rams’s presence and energy. “I’m really excited, especially because we got a lot of girls to come out this year. I’m excited to have a new team and bring people to the sport of tennis” said Rams. The team is getting prepared for the challenges this season will bring and all the opportunities for growth. Coach Rams fills the team with energy that affects everyone, contributing to a positive team environment. Rams’s teaching style helps with technical skills and just really the basics of tennis saying, “I’m excited to approach player development by working on the basic skills, like ground strokes, serving, and volleys, in the first few weeks before matches start, and even having indoor lessons where we talk about fundamentals of tennis”.

An abundant number of girls, many of whom are new to the sport, have decided to join the team this year. Because of this seasoned players, along with coaches, are able to help guide and instruct those who are just starting out. This sport can be challenging, but the team collectively is learning and experiencing the difficulties that come along with playing the sport. Nonetheless, the team is quickly grasping the basics. Their eagerness to learn positively impacts the team, which makes them a great bunch to watch. Other experienced players have taken roles as guiding their new teammates through drills, strategies, and other elements of match play.

Beyond technical skills, the girls fostered a supportive and positive spirit where each player is encouraged to make their best effort to improve. “I really want players to feel confident in their ability before they actually have a match, and just stay really consistent in drills and practice time,” said Rams. All in all, these girls are gearing up to take this season head on with new experiences and goals for each match. Come out to Pack The Nest, February 28th against Tempe, and be sure to come to their Senior Night April 9th against Dysart!
