Cha-ching! Elon Musk has officially bought Twitter for $44 billion dollars! This purchase has been pending since Elon first announced buying it on April 14, 2022. But it was formally confirmed on October 27, 2022, and Elon Musk now owns Twitter. However, on November 3rd, 2022, a former Twitter employee announced to sue Elon Musk due to the beginning of mass layoffs by Mr. Musk.

“Elon Musk made an unsolicited bid worth $44 billion for the social media platform, saying he wanted to turn Twitter into a private company and allow people to speak more freely on the service”. Thanks to www.nytimes.com, Elon’s first order of business is to privatize the company to allow people to speak more freely on the platform.

The day during the purchase, Mr. Musk made a tweet about why he bought the company and not just for money. In the article provided by www.news.sky.com, the exact tweet was, “I didn’t do it because it would be easy, I didn’t do it to make more money. I did it to try to help humanity, whom I love”. Mr. Musk’s reasoning for purchasing the company was to benefit humanity on the platform as they scroll through what they read or what other people say while tweeting.

Mr. Musk is benefiting the platform as he is trying to improve the service and experience for the users. However, on November 4th former Twitter employees are now suing Elon. “Twitter is being sued in a class-action lawsuit filed by former employees laid off as part of a mass firing instigated by the company’s new owner”. From the information provided by www.theverge.com, it seems like employees are frustrated with the company as Elon takes over and fires several employees. In-depth, www.shrm.org assures that “Twitter cut more than 950 California employees after Musk took over”.

Firing employees is not the only reason why Elon is being sued but also discrimination towards employees. As stated by www.marca.com, “In a deleted message and account, Shenna Lu explained that Elon Musk fired her not because she wasn’t capable of doing her job, it was because she was pregnant”. Whether this is true or not, firing a pregnant woman is pretty disheartening as Shenna was a former employee casually working at her job and later fired while pregnant. Not sure if Elon’s reason was to fire Shenna Lu due to her being pregnant or to make her life slightly more accessible by firing her to take care of her upcoming newborn child.

As of today, Elon Musk is still facing some criticism and lawsuits against former employees after recently becoming the new owner of Twitter. Although we can not comprehend his intentions for firing employees, we can assume he might be doing it for the greater of the company or for the fall of Twitter. The best for Elon Musk is for him to respond to why he is firing a variety of employees and if he is discriminating against employees.
