OPINION: What’s Behind the Popularity Gap Between Men’s and Women’s Sports

There has been a big controversy between men’s and women’s sports.

People are always saying that men’s sports are way better than women’s and some say it’s equal. On the other hand many people think women’s sports are better or just honestly don’t care. There is always an opinion of which is “better” or “worse.”

Well, for the people who do care, I believe that there are many reasons why men’s sports get more attention than women.

To begin with, men have been playing sports longer than women have. Men have been playing sports as early as 776 B.C., and that was when the first Olympic games were played,  during that time only free Greek men could play.

For women, they started playing sports around the late 1800s and early 1900s. Men are 2,675 years ahead of women when it comes to sports. This means that people have been watching men’s sports for two millennia and a couple centuries, while women’s sports have been around for about a hundred years.

Basically people were used to watching men compete. When it came to women, it was new, which automatically sets them at a disadvantage.

Secondly, the revenue. You see on T.V. sports critics talking about players like LeBron, KD, Stephen Curry, and their multi-million dollar contracts they just signed, well what about the women? The highest paid WNBA player last year was DeWanna Bonner of Phoenix Mercury, receiving about $224,000 for their performances in 2021.

That’s just a fraction of the pay that NBA players get. Why is it like this? While the WNBA brings in about $60 million, the NBA brings in a whopping $7.4 billion. It’s no wonder that the NBA gets better contracts than WNBA players. It’s just simply that people prefer the NBA over the WNBA.

In an interview with my mom I asked her a series of questions. One the most noteworthy one was, “Is it fair that men’s sports get more attention than women’s?”

My mom replied, “No, I believe that women should get just as much attention as men’s. They’re playing the same sport, and also the sexism to the sport. Some people don’t like women trying to act like men, but it’s just how the world works.”

I agreed with my mom, but also the fact the WNBA have called out NBA players is really disrespectful. The NBA has had nothing but support for the WNBA, and the fact they want to call out players who aren’t always on the headlines just upsets me.

In conclusion, men’s sports have more attention because of the viewership, their timelines, and revenue. I believe that there is a way that we can increase the popularity of women’s sports, but it will take a lot of work and dedication from the fans, players, and front offices and the leagues.
